Connect GA4, Google Ads, Search Console, and social data into one live dashboard โ without writing code.
Power BI is Microsoft's business intelligence platform that pulls data from multiple sources, transforms it, and visualizes it in interactive dashboards. It comes in two forms: Power BI Desktop (free Windows app for building reports) and Power BI Service (paid cloud platform for sharing and collaboration). For digital marketers, it replaces dozens of manual Excel reports with a single, always-updated source of truth.
Where GA4 tells you what happened on your website, Power BI tells you what it means โ by combining data from every channel (SEO, paid, social, email, CRM) into one place and letting you slice it any way you need.
At BankBazaar, we built a Power BI dashboard that pulls simultaneously from Google Search Console, GA4, and our CRM. Every Monday, the entire SEO team sees organic clicks, conversions, and revenue impact in a single view โ no manual data pulling required. Weekly reporting time dropped from 4 hours to 15 minutes. The dashboard also lets leadership filter by product category, device type, or landing page โ without touching a spreadsheet.
Power BI Pipeline
Data Sources โ Power Query (Transform) โ Data Model โ Visuals โ Dashboard โ Share with Team
Power BI connects to virtually any data source via built-in connectors: GA4, Google Ads, Google Search Console, Facebook Ads, Excel files, SQL databases, SharePoint, Salesforce, and hundreds more. You can refresh data on a schedule (hourly, daily, weekly) so dashboards always show current numbers without manual effort.
Power Query is the data transformation engine inside Power BI. Before your data reaches any visual, Power Query lets you clean it โ remove null rows, rename columns, unpivot tables, merge data from different sources, and apply custom transformations. Think of it as Excel's Power Query, but purpose-built for live data pipelines. Good Power Query work is what separates reliable dashboards from chaotic ones.
DAX is Power BI's formula language for calculated columns and measures. It looks similar to Excel formulas but is designed for relational data models. Common marketing uses: calculating conversion rate (Conversions / Sessions), cost per acquisition (Ad Spend / Conversions), month-over-month growth, and rolling 30-day averages. You don't need to master DAX to use Power BI, but knowing the basics unlocks 80% of what marketers need.
Power BI includes a rich library of built-in visuals: bar and column charts (channel comparison), line charts (traffic trends over time), KPI cards (big numbers for sessions, conversions, revenue), tables (keyword-level data), and slicers (filter the entire dashboard by date, device, or channel with one click). Custom visuals from the AppSource marketplace expand this further.
It's free โ download directly from Microsoft. No subscription needed for building reports. Windows-only; Mac users can use Power BI Service via browser for most tasks.
Start simple: connect an Excel file with your GSC or GA4 export. Once comfortable, use the native GA4 connector (Get Data โ Google Analytics) for a live connection that refreshes automatically.
Open Power Query Editor and remove null rows, rename columns to readable names (e.g., "ga:sessions" โ "Sessions"), and set correct data types. This step is critical โ garbage in means garbage out.
Drag "Date" to the X-axis and "Sessions" (or Clicks) to the Y-axis. Add a slicer for date range. You now have a functional, interactive traffic trend chart. This alone is more useful than most Excel reports.
Add slicer visuals for "Source/Medium" and "Device Category." Connect them to all visuals on the page so clicking a filter updates every chart simultaneously โ this is the Power BI magic moment.
Click "Publish" to upload your report to Power BI Service. Set up a scheduled refresh (daily) and share the dashboard link with your team. Everyone sees the same live data โ no version conflicts, no emailing Excel files.
